Should we do a first look?

First looks- when you see each other before the ceremony- are very common. Here are some things to consider if you should do a “first look” or wait to see each other at the ceremony.

first look on Nantucket Wedding

You want to join cocktail hour instead of taking photos. This is probably the most common reason couples choose to do a first look. They are able to do the majority of couples, wedding party and family portraits pre-ceremony which allows them to spend more time at cocktail hour with their guests.

  1. You want photos in an area different than your ceremony & reception. This is common on Nantucket if you are getting married in town and want photos in Sconset, or want to be able to go to Brant Point Lighthouse for photos.

  2. You are nervous or think you will be very emotional. Some people want to ease the nerves of the wedding day by seeing each other pre-ceremony.

  3. You want a private moment together. There are not a lot of moments you get to be alone together as a couple on your wedding day, as you spend most of the day celebrating with your family and friends! This is one of the few opportunities to have some time together just the two of you.

You may not need or want a first look and that’s okay too! Some common factors to take into consideration for waiting:

  1. You have a gap between your ceremony and the start of your reception. This is the most common with church weddings.  The break gives you time for all those photos!

  2. You have a large wedding party and need more time for hair and make up. If you want those getting ready photos a first look might not be logistically possible.

  3. You don’t want to add on additional hours with your photographer.

  4. You want the full surprise at the ceremony!

Either way, remember this is your wedding! It can look and be however you and your fiancé want it to!
